Rowing 2 Retirement
Rowing to Retirement
Much to dad’s chagrin, my high school bedroom walls sported several posters of long-haired rock stars and one of a young, redheaded woman sitting on suitcases, ready to depart for the world. That was me, freckle-faced and ready to take on the world. Hepburn once said, “paddle your own canoe.” Sounded like good advice. So, I did. When you are young, retiring seems like simple math. Fast forward a few decades and the equation looks a lot like algebra. Now, there is a bend in the river I do not know by heart. The nearing horizon looks bright or murky,

About Me
Who am I?
How can this question be answered without putting folks to sleep?
I once wrote an icebreaker speech for Toastmasters. Short, somewhat pithy, it nose-dived beyond the awkward and went something like this;
I am a career woman with several reinventions under my belt.
I am a loyal friend, good listener, decent storyteller, lover of books, nature, art,
politics, good conversation, and red wine.
I am a baker of brownies extraordinaire, an excellent parallel parker, and dreamer of dreams.
I do not remember the rest, but then it has been a while.
These days I do not bake many brownies…. they tend to take residence on my frame. And not too long ago, my parallel parking skills, honed in a West Virginia college town, proved more comic than brag-gable.
Most notably of all, I am getting older. Planning for and dreaming about retirement takes center stage in my hippo campus. Small wonder. Quite the change to navigate. You probably feel the same way. Every canoeist knows, leaving the creek for deeper waters makes forward planning a must. Retirement is the realm of big water.
I am hoping that others will share their thoughts and experiences and perhaps we can navigate together.
